Alcohol Ink Paintings
Secretariat (March 30, 1970 – October 4, 1989) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who in 1973 became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years, setting enduring speed records in all three races. Known as "Big Red," he was a massive, 16.2-hand chestnut with near-perfect conformation and a 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes.
Legacy and Impact
Triple Crown Records: Secretariat still holds the fastest time record in all three Triple Crown races: the Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5), Preakness Stakes (1:53), and Belmont Stakes (2:24).
Legendary Status: He was the first horse to appear on the covers of Time, Newsweek, and
Sports Illustrated simultaneously.
Awards: He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974, and was the only non-human on ESPN's 50 greatest athletes of the century list in 1999.
